SEFAR® Architecture Shows New Vision at the London Design Festival

David Chipperfield Architects’ Two Lines Installation a Highlight of the Event

Publish Date: Tuesday, October 11, 2011

DEPEW, NY… SEFAR® Architecture’s Vision fabric played the starring role in David Chipperfield Architects’ Two Lines installation at the London Design Festival, September 17-25th.  Two Lines served as this year’s Size+Matter exhibit – a cornerstone of the high-profile event. The installation will remain open through October 16th.

Since 2007, the Size+Matter commissions program at the London Design Festival has showcased and investigated the potential of new, innovative materials. This year, SEFAR Architecture Vision showed its potential, coated in copper and aluminum to ensure the strong, material-like appearance of the glass surface and to create different visual experiences inside and outside the installation.

28 identical vertical glass panels each measuring 3600 x 1200 mm were connected to horizontal glass panels of up to five meters in length by means of corresponding colored metal connections. The result was a sculptural dialogue between two identical forms, which only differ from one another in their orientation and the metal finishes of the fabric. Each of the forms consisted of a series of unframed glass panels with translucent, single-sided metal-coated fabric insets embedded in laminated glass.

The artistic application of SEFAR Architecture Vision fabric in the Two Lines installation was the brainchild of David Chipperfield Architects, but involved a number of other specialists who are familiar with Vision to achieve the desired effect. These specialists included glass fabricators Glas Trösch AG, St. Gallen, Switzerland and Bischoff Glastechnik AG, Bretten, Germany, foils provider DuPont™ with SentryGlas®, engineer Arup, London, England, and lighting designer Zumtobel.

“This sensational installation at the Southbank Centre is only one of the many possibilities for Vision,” says Rouven Seidler, Key European Account Manager for SEFAR Architecture. “It is very gratifying that David Chipperfield Architects chose these new materials for this project, and that we have been able to achieve the installation together with all of our partners.”

The application of SEFAR Architecture Vision is regarded as an exciting area for the architectural possibilities of technical fabric, especially in combination with glass. Participation in the London Design Festival provides SEFAR Architecture with opportunities to present Vision fabric in unusual and futuristic surroundings to an international public who are motivated by creativity, competition and new vision.
